My Career

I retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation with 30 years of service in April of 2013.

My journey into State service began in 1983 with the Location and Surveys office in Charlotte. I began as an Engineering Aide which meant I carried things and swung a bush axe. I rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Locating Engineer.

In 1992 I became a licensed Professional Land Surveyor and in 1995 transferred to Shelby to become the Division Design and Construct Engineer.

I climbed the ladder the old-fashioned way by working hard and realizing that I needed to further my education.

With a young family my only option was to study and go to school at night and on weekends. NCDOT offered great educational opportunities thru UNC ITRE which I took full advantage of. The classes were not only engineering related but also included management classes.

I remember on multiple occasions going to sleep in our living room reading a text book. But by the grace of God and the support of my family I was able to achieve my career goals.

I now work with TGS Engineers as a consultant embedded with the NCDOT Division Office in Shelby where I serve as the acting DDC Engineer.
