“The one who plants trees, knowing that he will never sit in their shade, has at least started to understand the meaning of life.”

Rabindranath Tagore

Planting a tree is a difficult task.  It requires manual labor.  But one must also do research to determine which soil to plant it in, it’s water requirements, and the amount of sunlight it needs.  One must set aside time for nurturing it as it grows by protecting from weeds, insects, or drought. Then, pruning and shaping it so it can mature to produce its fruit, which in this case is to provide beauty, shelter, and comfort for future generations.

“The one” accepts he may never see the fruit of his labor. But knowing that his vision and effort will one day provide for many gives him great satisfaction.

A Public servant is in the business of “planting trees”.

Whether it’s planning, engineering, maintenance, teaching, serving in the military, or a policeman or fireman helping someone in a time of crisis, the analogy applies. “The one” knows it’s unlikely they’ll see the fruits of their labor.  Yet every day puts forth their best effort.

Say Thank You to a public servant.

Let them know their service gives you great satisfaction.
